What to do in Bacalar, Mexico? 10 fun tips!

Throughout Mexico, you’ll find heavenly beaches with beautiful blue water, but Bacalar takes things even further. Although it’s a lake, the water here is even clearer and bluer than at most beach destinations. The water is comparable  to that of the Maldives or Bora Bora. Fortunately, this destination is much cheaper. What’s even more impressive is that Laguna Bacalar boasts seven different shades of blue thanks to its varying depths. Check out our tips for this idyllic corner of Mexico here.

Please note: During peak season, from December through March, Laguna Bacalar is closed on Wednesdays. This means that sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking are not permitted. Swimming from the shore is permitted. This measure is intended to allow the lake to recover during its busiest time of year.

How do you travel to Bacalar?

Bacalar is located near the Belizean border, and most people travel to Bacalar from Tulum ,  Valladolid , Palenque , or Caye Caulker. All roads to Bacalar are well-paved and often have long, straight stretches.
